Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS)

The MMPDS handbook is the worldwide primary source of statistically based design allowable properties for metallic materials and fasteners used in commercial and military aerospace applications. The database gives you validated material property data for structural analysis and design.

Certifying agencies recognize MMPDS within their limitations, including the FAA, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA. That recognition is why MMPDS is the reference for consistent, reliable material selection on airframes, engines and other aerospace components.

Matplus is a member of the MMPDS Industrial Steering Group (ISG) and of the Aerospace NRW network. We provide an extended MMPDS database with Matplus EDA® — in the cloud or on premises.

Material groups

The database covers 172 qualified, design-allowable materials. Each entry is statistically tested and validated. The alloy portfolio includes:

  • 72 aluminium alloys — 2000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 series wrought alloys plus 200.0 and 300.0 series cast alloys (for example 2024, 7075, 7050, A356.0)
  • 46 steels — austenitic stainless, carbon and low-alloy grades, maraging and high-alloy steels, and precipitation-hardening steels (for example AISI 4340, 300M, 15-5PH, 17-4PH, PH13-8Mo)
  • 16 titanium alloys — unalloyed CP titanium plus alpha, alpha-beta and beta alloys (for example Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al)
  • 15 heat-resistant superalloys — cobalt-base, iron-chromium-nickel and nickel-base grades (for example Inconel 718, Inconel 625, Hastelloy X, Waspaloy, Haynes 282)
  • Magnesium cast and wrought alloys, copper alloys, beryllium and hybrid materials, and multiphase alloys such as MP35N

The full material list, with a link from each designation into EDA®, is published on mmpds.eu.

MMPDS by the numbers

Statistically based material data from the current MMPDS release:

  • 40,050+ statistically validated data points
  • 3,311+ stress-strain curves
  • 1,688+ fatigue datasets
  • 4,574+ temperature-dependent properties

Design coverage

  • 172 design-allowable materials
  • 1,333+ engineering variants
  • 92 product forms
  • 145 heat treatment conditions

High-temperature and durability

  • 28,409+ temperature test values
  • 573 creep and relaxation datasets
  • 603 fracture toughness datasets
  • 1,688 fatigue curves

Master and Engineering Materials

Materials are structured as Master Materials and Engineering Materials so the selection stays traceable. The 172 Master Materials aggregate all data of a specific alloy across heat treatment, product form and dimensions. More than 1,300 Engineering Materials offer condition-specific data based on statistical analysis. Consistent links between the two levels keep the path from alloy family to a concrete delivery condition visible.

What you get with Matplus EDA®

The MMPDS data is bundled in EDA®, the Matplus materials information system:

  • Chemical composition and substance declarations — alloy compositions with CAS numbers for precise substance declarations and regulatory compliance
  • Advanced material structuring — Master and Engineering Materials so you never lose track in the database
  • Data analysis and graphical selection — a built-in data warehouse for advanced analysis and graphical material selection
  • CAE and CAD integration — assign materials directly to parts in leading CAE and CAD systems
  • Cloud or on-premises — the same statistically grounded dataset, delivered the way your organization works

Membership and access

Matplus is a member of the Aerospace NRW network and of the Industrial Steering Group (ISG) of MMPDS. That membership keeps the database aligned with the handbook and with the needs of aerospace engineering teams.

Registered users can log in to the MMPDS workspace in EDA®. Licenses and further information are available on mmpds.eu.
